Miss Sophie Steeds


Sophie graduated in 2023 from the University of Glasgow with a BSc Hons in Zoology, following which she pursued an MSc in Conservation Management of African Ecosystems.

Sophie grew up around Glasgow and has shown a strong passion for wildlife and conservation from a very young age. Since graduating, she has volunteered across a range of environmental groups including BugLife, The British Trust of Ornithology, and ARCHELON, The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece.

Sophie has recently joined GFT in 2026 as part of a 6-month internship for the Scottish Solway INNS Control and Knowledge Programme Phase 2, where she is currently involved in controlling plant INNS and working with local schools and communities to increase INNS knowledge across the freshwaters of Galloway.

Outside of work, Sophie enjoys spending most of her time outdoors either hiking, running, or reading.

New Restoration Projects Planned

Thanks to funding from the Scottish Government's Nature Restoration Fund managed by NatureScot, GFT has been working over the past year to design four exciting new restoration sites across the South West of Scotland.

Sampling Freshwater Macroinvertebrate

Freshwater invertebrates are relatively common within rivers and burns. They include groups such as insects, molluscs (snails), crustaceans (shrimps) and annelids (worms), amongst others.

6 month paid internship with GFT

A paid internship is available from April 2025 for 6 months to work with Galloway Fisheries Trust on the Solway Invasive Non Native Species (INNS) Control and Knowledge programme Phase 2.
