Despite the dismal weather, we enjoyed catching up with visitors to our tent at yesterday’s Wigtown Show, held at Bladnoch Park. As normal, we had a Solway net-caught wild salmon on show in the ‘guess the weight of the salmon’ competition. The salmon’s weight puzzled many but eventual winner Andrew Gladstone guessed 6 lb 10 oz which was the closer of two guesses to the actual weight (6 lb 9.8 oz). Well done Andrew.
Looking ahead, the coming weekends will be busy for GFT. Next stop is Lowther Show across the weekend of the 15th/16th August. This is a fantastic country show near Penrith. Take a look at the website to see for yourself. http://www.lowthershow.co.uk/ Amongst the many attractions, the Lowther Show has a large Fishing Isle where you can meet ourselves as well as members of neighbouring trusts (The River Annan Trust will be in attendance also).
On Saturday 22nd August, our annual Kirkcowan Fishing Competition takes place on the River Bladnoch and Tarf Water. Entry this year is £7 adult and £3 junior. Please meet at the Craighlaw Arms in Kirkcowan at 08:30 for beats to be drawn. All salmon (and pike over 5 lb) must be returned alive and should be entered via a digital photograph. For more details on the competition, call our office on 01671 40 3011.
Our grand finale this summer will be the GFT Dinner Auction which we hold every two years at Lochinch Castle near Stranraer. These nights have been very successful and have raised up to £30,000 on the night. The dinner auction is supported by (and proceeds shared with) Marie Curie and Combat Stress, two very worthy charities. If you would like to donate a lot for auctioning in the live or silent auction, please contact our office and speak to Angela who is busy compiling the auction catalogue. If you are interested in booking seats or a table at the auction, please also contact Angela via the GFT office line.
