GFT staff were out last week undertaking a fish rescue for Dumfries and Galloway Council. A road bridge is being replaced near Kirkcowan on the Ballochrae Burn. This burn is designated as part of the Bladnoch SAC. As this burn supports important fish populations, SEPA have required the contractors to put into place silt control measures and all works must be completed before the end of September to avoid when fish are spawning. GFT needed to undertake a fish rescue as a stretch of the burn is to be dried out and the water over pumped. From a 15m length of the burn a total of 28 juvenile trout, salmon parr and 12 eels were captured by electrofishing and relocated in the burn downstream.
